What is Channel 4?

Channel 4 is a free UK streaming service, licensed for viewers in the United Kingdom. Viewers in Thailand cannot open it directly, because the service checks the IP address and blocks connections from outside the UK. BritVPN presents a UK address so the app treats you as a UK viewer.

Why Channel 4 is blocked in Thailand

Channel 4's help pages give two streaming countries, the UK and the Republic of Ireland. From a Thai connection, channel4.com and the Channel 4 app turn down every programme, on demand as well as live. Shows you downloaded to a phone before leaving the UK will still play offline.

Not Thailand's Channel 4

A search for "Channel 4 Thailand" can also lead into Thai TV history. Thai Television Channel 4 at Bang Khun Phrom was Thailand's first television station, opening on 24 June 1955, and it is the forerunner of today's Channel 9 MCOT HD.

This page is about the British broadcaster Channel 4, the home of E4, More4 and Film4.

From 4oD to Channel 4

Channel 4's on-demand player launched as 4oD, short for 4 on Demand, in 2006. It became All 4 in 2015 and took the Channel 4 name in April 2023.

The official player lives only at channel4.com and in the Channel 4 app. Sites with "ch4" in their address are not run by Channel 4.

English-language TV in Thailand

Thai pay TV does carry some British channels. TrueVisions lists BBC Lifestyle, for example. For Channel 4 itself there is no Thai route, because its player is limited to the UK and Ireland.

The same goes for BBC iPlayer and ITVX, so anyone wanting to watch UK TV in Thailand needs a UK connection for all three.

Live Channel 4 on Thai time

Bangkok is seven hours ahead of the UK in winter and six in summer, with no clock changes of its own. Channel 4's 9pm slot lands at 4am in winter and 3am in summer.

Daytime in Britain is evening in Thailand, though. A programme at 1pm UK time is on at 8pm in Bangkok over the British winter, a good fit for Watch Live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Channel 4 work in Thailand?

Not from a Thai connection. Channel 4's player is limited to the UK and Ireland, and BritVPN gives you the UK connection it needs.

Is the UK's Channel 4 the same as Thai TV Channel 4?

No. Thai Television Channel 4 was Thailand's first TV station, opened in 1955, and it became today's Channel 9 MCOT HD. The British Channel 4 is unrelated.

What happened to 4oD?

4oD was renamed All 4 in 2015, and All 4 became Channel 4 in April 2023. It is the same on-demand service.

Is "play ch4" an official Channel 4 site?

Channel 4's official player is only at channel4.com and in the Channel 4 app. Other sites using "ch4" in the name are not Channel 4's.

How can I watch UK TV in Thailand?

The three free UK players, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4, all refuse Thai connections. BritVPN covers all three and has a 3-day free trial.

Is it legal to watch Channel 4 in Thailand?

Using BritVPN to reach a UK service is lawful in itself. You still have to follow that service's terms, and BBC iPlayer separately expects a UK TV licence.
