What is Channel 4?
Channel 4 is the free streaming service of the UK broadcaster Channel 4, formerly called All 4. Unlike BBC iPlayer and ITVX, it does stream to the Republic of Ireland, but with a smaller catalogue and without live TV.
What Channel 4 blocks in Ireland
Channel 4's help pages say streaming is available in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, "although not for all programmes" in Ireland. Watch Live, the live stream of Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4, is for UK residents only, and so is the ad-free Channel 4+ subscription. Programmes whose Irish rights belong to another broadcaster are missing from the Irish catalogue.
Does the Channel 4 player work in Ireland?
Yes, partly. Open channel4.com or the Channel 4 app from Ireland and you can sign up, browse and stream on demand. You can also download programmes to watch offline, which Channel 4 allows for Irish residents.
What you see is the Irish catalogue. Shows that Channel 4 can't license for Ireland are hidden or refuse to play, and the live channels don't appear at all.

What's missing in Ireland
- Watch Live. The live streams of Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 are UK-only.
- Channel 4+. The ad-free tier is sold to UK viewers only.
- Some box sets and films. Anything whose Irish rights belong to another broadcaster is left out.
- Casting downloads. Channel 4 won't cast a downloaded programme to Chromecast outside the UK.
Channel 4, E4 and More4 on Irish TV
The linear channels are easier to get than the live stream. Virgin Media Ireland carries Channel 4, E4 and More4, with Channel 4 +1, and Sky Ireland lists Channel 4, E4 and More4 in HD. None of them is on Saorview, so a free-to-air aerial won't pick them up.
Ireland and the UK share a time zone, so Channel 4's 9pm programme is on at 9pm in Dublin too.

4oD, All 4 and Channel 4 are the same service
Channel 4's player launched as 4oD in 2006, became All 4 in 2015 and has been called Channel 4 since April 2023. Searches for the All 4 player, the 4oD player or the E4 player all lead to the same app.

When you need a UK connection
If the programme you want is missing, or you want to watch live, the Irish version can't help. BritVPN routes Channel 4 through a UK address so you get the UK catalogue and Watch Live, on the same account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you watch Channel 4 in Ireland?
Yes, on demand. Channel 4 streams to the Republic of Ireland, but some programmes are missing for rights reasons and live TV is UK-only.
Why can't I watch Channel 4 live in Ireland?
Channel 4's help pages say Watch Live is only available to UK residents, for legal reasons. A UK connection through BritVPN shows the live channels.
Is All 4 the same as the Channel 4 player?
Yes. All 4 was renamed Channel 4 in April 2023. Before 2015 it was called 4oD.
Can I get Channel 4+ in Ireland?
No. Channel 4+ is sold to UK viewers only. In Ireland you get the free, ad-supported version.
Can I download Channel 4 shows in Ireland?
Yes. Channel 4 allows downloads for Irish residents, and downloads keep playing offline when you travel. You can't cast them to a Chromecast from abroad.
Is it legal to watch Channel 4 in Ireland?
Using BritVPN to reach a UK service is lawful in itself. You still have to follow that service's terms, and BBC iPlayer separately expects a UK TV licence.
