What is Channel 4?

Channel 4 is a free UK streaming service, licensed for viewers in the United Kingdom. Viewers in New Zealand cannot open it directly, because the service checks the IP address and blocks connections from outside the UK. BritVPN presents a UK address so the app treats you as a UK viewer.

Why Channel 4 is blocked in New Zealand

Channel 4 says on its help pages that rights agreements limit its streaming service to the UK and the Republic of Ireland. New Zealand IP addresses are outside that area, so on-demand and live programmes are both blocked, even for UK citizens.

Channel 4 schedule in NZ time

Not to be confused with C4

Kiwis searching for "C4 channel NZ" may remember C4, the MediaWorks music channel. It closed in June 2014 and has nothing to do with Channel 4, the British broadcaster behind E4, More4 and Film4.

Channel 4 on demand outside the UK

Channel 4's streaming service holds the catch-up and box-set libraries for all four of its channels. Outside the UK and Ireland there is no version of it at all: no reduced catalogue, no paid tier, nothing to sign up to.

Is Channel 4 free? In the UK, yes, with adverts, plus an optional ad-free Channel 4+ subscription for UK viewers. From New Zealand the free tier works once your connection is in the UK.

If you're visiting from the UK, programmes you downloaded at home will play on iPhone and Android while you're here, though Channel 4 blocks casting them to a TV.

The Watch Live tab, which streams Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 as they go out, is kept for UK residents. Irish viewers get the on-demand service without it, and New Zealand gets neither.

When UK shows reach New Zealand clocks

Bake Off, on Channel 4 at 8pm UK time on Tuesdays, falls on Wednesday morning in New Zealand: 7am until late September, 8am through October, and 9am once the UK clocks go back at the end of October.

Live viewing works for early risers. Everyone else can stream the episode on demand later in the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I watch Channel 4 in NZ?

Use a UK connection. Channel 4 streams only to the UK and Ireland, so connect BritVPN, sign in to Channel 4 and watch live or on demand.

Can I watch Channel 4 outside the UK?

Only in the Republic of Ireland, with a reduced catalogue. Everywhere else, including New Zealand, Channel 4 blocks streaming unless your connection is in the UK.

Is Channel 4 free?

Yes, the standard Channel 4 service is free with adverts. Channel 4+ removes the ads but is sold only to UK viewers.

Is C4 in New Zealand the same as Channel 4?

No. C4 was a New Zealand music channel run by MediaWorks, which closed in 2014. Channel 4 is a separate British broadcaster.

Is it legal to watch Channel 4 in New Zealand?

Using BritVPN to reach a UK service is lawful in itself. You still have to follow that service's terms, and BBC iPlayer separately expects a UK TV licence.
