What is Channel 4?

Channel 4 is a free UK streaming service, licensed for viewers in the United Kingdom. Viewers in Norway cannot open it directly, because the service checks the IP address and blocks connections from outside the UK. BritVPN presents a UK address so the app treats you as a UK viewer.

Why Channel 4 is blocked in Norway

According to Channel 4's help pages, its programmes can be streamed in the UK, Ireland and the Crown Dependencies only. Norway falls outside, so any Norwegian connection hits the location check. Live viewing has an extra condition on top, as Watch Live is meant for UK residents.

Channel 4 schedule

Hvordan se Channel 4 i Norge?

In short, by connecting through the UK. Channel 4's player checks your location before every programme, and a Norwegian address in Oslo, Stavanger or Trondheim fails. Using a UK connection is what turns the catalogue back on.

A British SIM doesn't solve it either. Channel 4 states that its service can't be watched over a UK SIM while overseas.

Channel 4 is free in the UK, paid for by adverts, and that same free account works from Norway once your connection is British. Channel 4+, the ad-free tier, is only sold to UK viewers.

Channel 4, TV4 and TV 2 are different channels

Searching "channel 4 norge" often turns up TV4 or TV4 Play. Those belong to a Swedish broadcaster and have no link to Britain's Channel 4. Norway's own big commercial channel is TV 2, and its streaming service, TV 2 Play, has no tie to Channel 4 either.

Britain's Channel 4 is a public service broadcaster whose family includes E4, More4 and Film4, all available through the same app.

4 on Demand, All 4 and Channel 4

If you remember "4 on Demand", you're thinking of the same service. Channel 4's player launched as 4oD in 2006, was renamed All 4 in 2015 and took the Channel 4 name in April 2023. Under none of those names has it streamed to Norway. Typing any of the old names into an app store now brings up the Channel 4 app.

Watching in Norwegian time

Norway is one hour ahead of Britain all year. A 10pm Channel 4 broadcast starts at 11pm in Norway, which matters if you want to watch live rather than catch up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I watch Channel 4 in Norway?

Use a UK connection such as BritVPN, then open channel4.com or the Channel 4 app. On a Norwegian connection it won't stream at all.

Is TV4 the same as Channel 4?

No. TV4 is a Swedish channel, unrelated to Britain's Channel 4. Norway's main commercial channel is TV 2.

What happened to 4 on Demand?

4oD became All 4 in 2015 and has been called Channel 4 since April 2023. It is the same service.

Can I watch Channel 4 live from Norway?

Watch Live is restricted to UK residents, so you'd need a British connection. With BritVPN on, Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 stream live.

Can I download Channel 4 programmes to watch in Norway?

Yes, if you download them on the iOS or Android app while in the UK. They can't be cast to a TV from abroad.

Is it legal to watch Channel 4 in Norway?

Using BritVPN to reach a UK service is lawful in itself. You still have to follow that service's terms, and BBC iPlayer separately expects a UK TV licence.
