What is Channel 4?
Channel 4 is a free UK streaming service, licensed for viewers in the United Kingdom. Viewers in Canada cannot open it directly, because the service checks the IP address and blocks connections from outside the UK. BritVPN presents a UK address so the app treats you as a UK viewer.
Why Channel 4 is blocked in Canada
According to Channel 4's own help pages, its streaming service is available in the UK and the Republic of Ireland and nowhere else, because of rights agreements. A Canadian IP address falls outside that area, so neither on-demand programmes nor the live channels will play.
Is Channel 4 free in Canada?
Channel 4 is free in the UK, paid for by adverts, and there is also an ad-free Channel 4+ subscription. Neither is offered in Canada, so there is no Canadian sign-up, free or paid.
With a UK connection, the free tier is all you need. You register, sit through the ad breaks and get the same programmes a UK viewer does.

Bake Off and Channel 4 in Canada
Channel 4 puts its geo-blocking down to rights agreements. Its programmes are licensed country by country, and in Canada, for example, Bake Off is CBC's to show.
The Great British Baking Show, as Bake Off is known in Canada, streams on CBC Gem, but well behind the UK. The 2025 series didn't reach Canada until the following March.
On Channel 4 you can watch it live at 8pm UK time on Tuesdays, which is 3pm in Toronto, or on demand afterwards.

UK broadcasts on a Canadian clock
Channel 4's prime time falls in the Canadian afternoon. A 9pm UK programme starts at 1pm in British Columbia, 2pm in Alberta, 3pm in Manitoba, 4pm in Ontario and Quebec and 5pm in the Maritimes.
The UK and Canada change their clocks on different weekends in spring and autumn, so for a few weeks a year each of those times moves an hour later.
