What is Channel 4?

Channel 4 is a free UK streaming service, licensed for viewers in the United Kingdom. Viewers in Greece cannot open it directly, because the service checks the IP address and blocks connections from outside the UK. BritVPN presents a UK address so the app treats you as a UK viewer.

Why Channel 4 is blocked in Greece

According to its help pages, Channel 4 only streams to the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the Crown Dependencies. Greece falls outside that, so the player turns away Greek connections whether you're in Thessaloniki, on Crete or using a ferry's Wi-Fi.

Today's Channel 4 schedule

Live stream versus catch-up

Channel 4's player does two jobs. Catch-up, also called on demand, holds programmes you can start whenever you like. The live stream, which Channel 4 calls Watch Live, shows Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 as they go out.

Channel 4 restricts Watch Live to UK residents. The catch-up library reaches Ireland too, but not Greece, so from a Greek connection both are unavailable. Paying for Channel 4+ doesn't help, since Channel 4 says the ad-free tier can't be watched from the EU.

Channel 4's schedule in Greek time

Greece is two hours ahead of the UK, and both put their clocks forward and back on the same weekends. A 9pm Channel 4 programme starts at 11pm in Athens, and anything after 10pm UK time ends past midnight.

Catch-up tends to suit evening shows better than the live stream; daytime and early-evening programmes are easier to watch as they air. On demand also ignores the time difference entirely, which makes it the half of the player most useful in Greece.

What a UK connection changes

With BritVPN on, Channel 4 treats you as a viewer in the UK. Watch Live appears, the full catch-up catalogue opens, and you keep the account and watch history you use at home.

Only your UK TV traffic is sent through the UK, so Greek websites, banking and maps carry on as normal.

As a backup for a ferry crossing or a beach with no signal, Channel 4 lets you watch programmes you downloaded in the UK while you're abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I watch Channel 4 in Greece?

You need a UK connection. BritVPN provides one, with a 3-day free trial, and the full player then works in Greece.

Can I live stream Channel 4 from Greece?

Not directly. Watch Live is for UK residents only, but it appears once BritVPN connects you through the UK.

Is Channel 4 on demand available in Greece?

No. Channel 4's catch-up streams only in the UK, Ireland and the Crown Dependencies, so Greece needs a UK connection.

What's the difference between Channel 4 catch-up and Watch Live?

Catch-up lets you start programmes whenever you want. Watch Live streams Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 as they broadcast.

What time is Channel 4 on in Greece?

Two hours later than in the UK, all year. A 9pm Channel 4 programme starts at 11pm Greek time.

Is it legal to watch Channel 4 in Greece?

Using BritVPN to reach a UK service is lawful in itself. You still have to follow that service's terms, and BBC iPlayer separately expects a UK TV licence.
