What is Channel 4?
Channel 4 is a free UK streaming service, licensed for viewers in the United Kingdom. Viewers in Italy cannot open it directly, because the service checks the IP address and blocks connections from outside the UK. BritVPN presents a UK address so the app treats you as a UK viewer.
Why Channel 4 is blocked in Italy
Channel 4 holds its programme rights for the UK and Ireland, and its help pages say the service can't be streamed in other countries. An Italian connection gets an out-of-area message on channel4.com and in the app. Watch Live and the ad-free Channel 4+ are stricter still, open to UK residents only.
Channel 4 or Rete 4?
On an Italian TV remote, number 4 is Rete 4, Mediaset's channel, which streams free on Mediaset Infinity. It has no connection with the British broadcaster, and neither does Rai 4, which sits at number 21.
This page is about the UK's Channel 4, the public broadcaster behind E4, More4 and Film4, and its streaming service, formerly called All 4.

Is Channel 4 free?
In the UK, yes. Channel 4 is funded by advertising, so watching on demand or live costs nothing beyond registering a free account. Expect ad breaks before and during each programme, much as on Italian commercial TV.
The paid extra, Channel 4+, takes out most of the adverts. It is sold only to UK residents and doesn't include Watch Live, so it adds nothing for a viewer in Italy.

Free live streaming, with a UK connection
Channel 4's live streaming is free as well, but only for UK residents, which is why it vanishes in Italy. With BritVPN connected, Watch Live shows Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 as they air.
Italy is one hour ahead of the UK all year, so add an hour to any Channel 4 listing. A 9pm programme is on at 10pm in Rome, Turin or Naples. Italy and the UK change their clocks on the same dates, so that rule never needs adjusting.
