What is Channel 4?

Channel 4 is a free UK streaming service, licensed for viewers in the United Kingdom. Viewers in Malaysia cannot open it directly, because the service checks the IP address and blocks connections from outside the UK. BritVPN presents a UK address so the app treats you as a UK viewer.

Why Channel 4 is blocked in Malaysia

Channel 4's help pages say its streaming service works in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, with Watch Live and Channel 4+ reserved for UK residents. A Malaysian IP address sits outside all of that, so programmes simply won't start, and being a UK citizen makes no difference.

Is Channel 4 free?

In the UK, yes. The standard service costs nothing and runs adverts before and during programmes. Channel 4+ is an optional paid tier without the ads, and only UK residents can take it out.

You still need a free account to watch, and it asks for a UK postcode. From Malaysia, the free version works normally once your connection comes from the UK.

Watching Channel 4 live from Malaysia

Watch Live streams Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 as they broadcast in Britain. Malaysia is eight hours ahead of the UK in winter and seven in summer, so a 9pm programme starts at 5am, or 4am in summer, the following morning in Kuala Lumpur.

Live viewing suits the UK's daytime schedule, which lands in the Malaysian evening. For prime-time shows, waiting for the on-demand version is usually easier.

British TV on Malaysian screens

Astro still carries BBC News and BBC Earth, but we couldn't find Channel 4, E4 or More4 in any Malaysian package. For Channel 4's own programmes, the streaming service is the only route, and it needs a UK connection.

Splitting time between the UK and Malaysia

Channel 4's iPhone and Android apps let you download programmes while you are in the UK and watch them offline after landing in Kuala Lumpur. Casting those downloads to a Chromecast won't work abroad, because Channel 4 treats casting as streaming, and anything released after you leave still needs a UK connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Channel 4 free to watch in Malaysia?

Channel 4's free tier is only free inside the UK. From Malaysia it needs a UK connection, and the paid Channel 4+ tier is for UK residents only.

Can I watch Channel 4 live in Malaysia?

Only through a UK connection. Channel 4 keeps Watch Live for UK residents, so a Malaysian connection sees no live channels.

How do I watch Channel 4 from Malaysia?

Connect BritVPN, create a free Channel 4 account with a UK postcode you may use, and pick a live channel or an on-demand programme.

Which channels does Channel 4 stream?

Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 live, plus a large on-demand library of series and films.

Is it legal to watch Channel 4 in Malaysia?

Using BritVPN to reach a UK service is lawful in itself. You still have to follow that service's terms, and BBC iPlayer separately expects a UK TV licence.
