What is The Long Shadow About?
The Long Shadow tracks the five years Peter Sutcliffe was at large, attacking and murdering women, many of them sex workers. The first episode, which is available to stream on ITVX when abroad, explores the aftermath of Wilma Mccan’s (Gemma Laurie) murder.
In a harrowing scene, we see her four children awaiting her return when the police arrive. We then get a glimpse into the circumstances — financial pressures, a failing economy and societal expectations — which lead Emily Jackson (Katherine Kelly) to sex work, before she becomes the second known victim of Sutcliffe.
As years roll on, we see the mistreatment of Marcella Claxton (Jasmine Lee-Jones) at the hands of the police after she is attacked by Sutcliffe — an attack which results in the loss of her unborn child.
