What is Nolly About?

Noele 'Nolly' Gordon was a household name for years thanks to her role in the long-running soap opera Crossroads. She played the flame-haired widow Meg Richardson and was a popular character in the programme. When viewers meet Nolly in the opening scenes, she is firmly established in the role and a cherished figure to viewers across the country. Over 15 million Brits tune in every night to watch.

Nolly devoted herself to the role of motel owner Meg Mortimer, a for the better part of two decades. Then in 1981, at the height of the show’s success and the peak of Nolly’s fame, she was axed without ceremony, without warning and with no explanation. Her unceremonious ousting shocked fans and dominated newspaper front pages for weeks.

The public battle t0 keep Meg as a part of the Crossroads series was lost and Nolly was given her marching orders. Nolly was devastated to have been ousted from a job she loved so dearly. As a sign of resilience, she went back to her roots in the theatre and starred in a handful of successful productions for a few years. A bright third act seemed to be calling, but this was tragically stopped in its tracks when Nolly was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Despite being such a huge figure in the public eye for over two decades, Nolly has become something of an obscure figure today. Russell T Davies aims to bring Nolly back into the public eye with his new miniseries. Hot off the success of It's A Sin and the hype around his Doctor Who return, the acclaimed storyteller is now paying tribute to a hero of the country.

Shooting this for album art for the band Easy Kill. We wanted to reflect the references in the lyrics to movies and cinema; whilst also showing the desolate/isolated emotions dealt with in the album, too.

Final Words

For many viewers, this programme will be their first introduction to Nolly – and it won't be easily forgotten. Davies has crafted a series that spares no detail in telling the true story. Those who tune in to watch Nolly will no doubt be impacted by the series. It almost certainly will be one of the top British miniseries of the year.
