We explain how you can easily watch ITV when living in Canada

Even though we've witnessed unprecedented growth in the number of streaming providers active in Canada, including those that operate with a particular focus of providing British content (Britbox and Acorn TV), it must be said that Canada still lags behind when it comes to streaming British TV. This is especially true following the recent shutdown of BBC Canada.

Britbox and Acorn TV claim to have a great lineup of television shows from across the pond. However, once you learn of how good streaming British television is in the United Kingdom, you'll be unconvinced. UK residents can stream hundreds of locally made TV shows (both old and new) from the likes of ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC whenever they want. You can have this too–with Beebs.

There is a need for an alternative to the existing streaming providers–one with complete access and internet freedom as its core value. A better choice for international fans of British television. This is why we created the Beebs Chrome Extension.

Don't bring a knife to a gun fight

Beebs functions much like a VPN, unlocking all of the content found on BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub or All4 for Canadians. With Beebs, you have it just as good as the Brits do. If you want a quick solution and want to stream British TV shows straight away, follow these steps and you'll be sorted.

1. Download Chrome Browser (if you're not already using it)

2. Install the Beebs Chrome Extension

3. Head over to BBC iPlayer, All 4 or ITV Hub

All these sites will work once you have registered. Happy viewing!

If you're not convinced that Beebs is the best option for you, let's have a quick look over what you'll be able to stream from Canada via the Beebs Chrome Extension. 2020 was a particularly strong year for ITV with the broadcaster stepping up during the lockdown. ITV Hub packed schedule with brand new shows across Entertainment, Drama, Factual and Daytime.

When it comes to entertainment, ITV have struck gold with The Masked Singer UK. Their unique version of the show has been a huge hit in Britain and has turned into an unmissable show coming into Season 2. Daytime TV favourites such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale are performing better than ever with viewers tuning in more than ever.

What are the other alternatives to watching British TV in Canada

Whether you are living, working or just visiting it is good to know that there are plenty of ways to watch ITV from Canada.Unfortunately it is not as easy as visiting the ITV Hub website and enjoying the programmes because you need to be resident in the UK to gain full access since ITV geoblocks its content. Here are some alternative methods to watch ITV shows from Canada.

Option 1: Purchase a subscription for a Acorn TV or Britbox

ITV is one of the United Kingdom's best broadcasters, consistently producing unique and high quality TV series year on year. If you're trying to watch ITV from Canada, you'll be unable to access the website. This is why Britbox was launched in Canada which is a joint venture between ITV and the BBC. Britbox was launched as a main rival to Acorn TV, which has operated in Canada for a good part of a decade.

We have a full breakdown of Britbox v Acorn TV if you wish to read further on the topic. We go over how how much each service costs, what you can stream and via which devices.

Option 2: Pay for a VPN

Luckily there are a few ways to hide and switch your IP address so it looks as though you are in England (or Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for that matter). A VPN is a popular choice for those wishing to do just this. A VPN is a piece of downloadable software which will re-route your internet connection to another country of your choosing. This means, in theory, you will be able to access the ITV player from Canada. There are three main problems for some people using a VPN.

Firstly, they can slow down your internet connection. With the connection being bounced from Canada to the UK and back again this is an obvious problem. Secondly, you will need at least some minor technical knowledge to install the software and troubleshoot problems when they occur. Thirdly, not all VPNs are created equally, meaning that not all VPNs will be able to bypass the security measures employed by ITV.

Option 3: Use a BBC Proxy Server

As the third option, you can use a proxy server to gain access to ITV Hub, but it is definitely the most challenging option and requires the most tech knowledge.

The very term 'proxy server' sends shivers down the spine of non-techy people but it shouldn't really. They work in a similar way to VPNs in that they change a users IP address so that it appears in another location. In this case, you'd want the device to signal that it is located in the UK.

Your connection is less secure using a proxy server and free ones can include a lot of annoying adverts. There is also a cap on how much content you can watch, depending on which proxy you choose to use.
