One of the most frustrating problems for TV viewers based in Dubai is their inability to make use of and stream the UK-based BBC iPlayer.

The catch-up on demand service, 24-hour access to news programmes, the 'watch from start' feature and some great sporting events are examples of what people living in Dubai miss because they can't watch the BBC iPlayer to watch such programmes as the new His Dark Materials 2

True, many people can access the BBC channels through their satellite and cable providers - but if you are simply out there on a holiday, a short work break or placement then this may not be an option depending where you are staying.

So, how can you access streaming the BBC iPlayer from Dubai?

There are realistically just three options:

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

This is currently the most popular option for watching the iplayer from outside the UK.Connections are generally robust and after a little tinkering following a software download are a solid option for many people.

You may need a bit of technical knowledge to use a VPN if things go wrong once you have downloaded the software. If you know how to switch between protocols and comfortable being able to "connect through the SmartDNS server" then you should have no problems at all. In that case, you will be back to watching your favourite BBC shows from Dubai in no time at all. If not then you may need something else.

Proxy Server

Another option would be to find a proxy server (which is similar to a VPN but much more lightweight). If you are lucky enough to find a free version on the web and just want to watch one short programme then a proxy server could be an option. However if you want to binge watch the latest series of Top Gear, for example, then perhaps think again because limit what you are allowed to stream.

Beebs - a Google Chrome Extension

Here at Beebs we have developed another (better) option for you. It is a one- touch tool - a simple Google Chrome Extension - to help you access BBC iPlayer from Dubai or indeed anywhere in the world!

Once installed, you simply click on the extension icon in your browser and are connected to a server located in the UK and are able to easily view iPlayer or other UK geoblocked channels such as ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.
