What is ITV's Anne about?
On 15th April 1989. Anne Williams says goodbye to her 15-year-old son as he goes to Hillsborough for a football match played between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest. She will never see him alive again. Her son, Kevin, was among the 97 other men, women, and children who perished on that fateful day. Another 800 suffered injuries at the football stadium in Sheffield.
In the aftermath of the events, despair quickly turns to anger as the authorities try to cover up what really happened to her boy and the other fans who died on that fateful day. South Yorkshire Police (SYP) fed the press false stories suggesting that hooliganism and drunkenness by Liverpool supporters had caused the disaster.
Anne was an inspiration for the city of Liverpool when blame towards Liverpool fans persisted. She devoted her life to campaigning for justice for victims of the Hillsborough disaster. The British historical drama television miniseries which follows in her footsteps as she devotes years her life to search for answers. She spends decades reaching out to fans of both teams, seeking new evidence, and desperately trying to uncover the truth of what really happened.
Who is in the cast of Anne?
Maxine Peake gives a heart-rending performance as Anne Williams, telling her the story of her life which she devoted to finding justice for her son and the other supporters who lost their lives in the tragic event. Stephen Walters (Shetland) co-stars as Williams' husband Steve.
