Director James Bluemel's new documentary series examines the realities of The Troubles, with personal archive from civilians and soldiers from both sides of the conflict. With an emphasis on seeing those on the ground rather than the politicians who worked behind the scenes, we hear from those who went through it.

Northern Ireland was always on the news during the decades long conflict. Bombs, violence, murder and pain seemed to be ever present there. James Bluemel makes a power film with his curating of unfiltered personal accounts along with archive footage. to tell the story of the people and communities that had to live with conflict daily – and are still dealing with its legacies today.

The release of Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland marks 25 years since the Good Friday Agreement. Signed on 10 April 1998, it brought an end to the 30-year conflict in Northern Ireland. Commissioned for BBC Two, BBC Northern Ireland, iPlayer and PBS, the project has been a passion project for all those involved.
