A Story Within a Story

Based on the bestselling novel by Anthony Horowitz, Magpie Murders is a classic whodunnit with a clever twist. The main protagonist is Susan Ryeland (played by Lesley Manville), a London book editor who manages the important writer, Alan Conway (Conleth Hill,).

Conway is famous for his novels about a 1950s detective named Atticus Pünd. His latest book is titled Magpie Murders. But there are two problems. The copy Susan receives is missing the final chapter in which Atticus Pünd solves the mystery. To make matters even more complicated, Conway has been found dead. The question is whether his death was suicide or murder.

Susan needs to find the missing pages so she can publish his final work. To do this she needs to travel to Suffolk and meet with the people who know Conway. What she fins is that many have reason to hate the author, and may hold the answer to what happened to him. A fascinating bit of information we learn is that Conway creates his characters based on real life people such as his sister, his ex-wife, his gardener, etc.

With the use of clever editing, the programme merges the scenes of Susan Ryeland and her investigations with the fictional storyline of the novel. Viewers not only watch Susan interact with the real life villagers but we also watch Atticus Pünd attempt to solve the murder story in Conway's novel.

This was part of a shoot for a local estate, the town is of Rostherne in Cheshire is pretty much untouched.

Final Words

Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz brings an Agatha Christie inspired country murder story. The peaceful 1950s English village of Saxby-on-Avon makes for the perfect setting to escape reality and becomes engrossed in a classic whodunnit. It's certainly a well plotted crime novel, with a fabulous twist to boot. It's proven to be one of the most original series on BBC One, and is certainly worth binging.
