His Dark Materials: Season Two Trailer

Trailer for His Dark Materials series 2

BBC and HBO Step Up to the Plate

When the BBC first announced that they were teaming up with the HBO to make His Dark Materials into a television series, it was met with both excitement and trepidation from fans.

Unlike the movie adaption that had come before it, His Dark Materials television adaption successfully captured the essence of Philip Pullman's story.

The much-loved work from English novelist Philip Pullman had captured the imagination of young adults around the world since the release of the first book in the mid 90s.

The adaption seemed to have been in good hands, having been headed by New Line Cinema who'd just released the exceptional Lord of the Rings trilogy. If such a big company with a great track record couldn't adapt His Dark Materials, then who could?

The team behind series one managed to remain true to the novels while also leaving out elements of the story that wouldn't work on the small-screen. It's a delicate balancing act that has paid off on this occasion.

The cast of His Dark Materials

It was only fair that fans of the novels were cautious of this announcement after they'd experienced the disappointing movie adaption of the first book back in 2007.

One of the key successes that won over fans was the casting. The main cast of His Dark Materials were outstanding in their performances. We must give praise to newcomer Dafne Keen who played the heroine, Lyra Belacqua.

The young actress resonated with audiences thanks to her confident performance. Ruth Wilson, who is best known for her role as the brilliant psychopath and murderer Alice Morgan in Luther, took on the role of Marisa Coulter and was equally as impressive.

Irish actor Andrew Scott (best known for his role in Sherlock) always seems to steal the spotlight in whatever show he's in and, unsurprisingly, he's done the same as Colonel John Parry in this show.

If the trailer for the new season is anything to go by, we should be seeing more of Colonel John Parry on our screens in the coming episodes–lucky us! Check out the trailer for season two of His Dark Materials below.
